court after telling their 11-year-old he needs to leave his school. his parents say he doesn't have the disease, only the gene. but school officials insist other student who is do have the disease are at risk and coleman needs to transfer. the story you'll see only on nbc bay area news. >> reporter: that's right, jessica, we talked with the family tonight. they say they're very disappointed their son is being told to transfer to another middle school for a disease he does not have. but the school district says it's doing what's best fr all of the students. >> the 11-year-old has been told he can no longer go to jordan middle school and now must transfer to turman middle school. the school district says he's a risk to other children. therein lies the dilemma. when he was born, he had je ngec screening done.

million americans living with the disease, 4% were diagnosed before the age of 65 and that number is growing. >> that means patient's children are younger too. susan's daughter, claire, is only 22 and she's concerned about what she might face. >> you know, you're going to show up and be like oh, my mom doesn't know who i am. that kind of stuff. so it's obviously a real concern. >> behavioral neurologist says however difficult, an early diagnosis can offer patients an advantage with medication. >> yes, taking those medications earlier means that you'll get more use out of them. >> reporter: still, he says, current medications will not slow the progression of the disease. but he says something simple might. >> the one thing that we've identified so far that does seem to slow down the disease process is aerobic exercise. as old fashioned as that sounds, that's still more effective than any medication that's been invented.

>> and he says research shows exercise can help delay the age you develop also hiemer's if you're at risk. as she shares memories with her daughter, susan says she considers her early diagnose know sisz a gift. more time to max decisions about how how she wants to do things. but she also recognizes she may have less time with her family than she'd hoped. >> i want to spend the rest of my life with my family. but i kind of, in my life, i've always tried to take the high road. >> which is why she is now part of a clinical trial at stanford testing a new drug. and she is volunteering with the alzheim alzheimer's association. >> i have to take things day by day. i feel great now. >> in san jose, nbc bay area news. >> we certainly wish her and her family the best.
